learn crochet basics

If you don't know anything about how to crochet, there are some things that are good to know. Crochet is derived from the French word croc or croche, meaning hook.

Is Christmas coming fast and gift ideas slow? The first thing to consider is the type of hooks or hooks you'll be using. This is the same as the basic starting chain in crochet, except you are using a crochet hook instead of your fingers.

Pick an interesting baby blanket pattern. Crochet is a series of interlocking loops of thread onto a chain using a thin rod with a hook at the end. If you are a beginner and frequently lose your place, write the patterns on lined paper, one instruction at a time.

Then you bring the yarn free-flowing behind the hook to the front and grab it with the hook. You may be able to find places that you can go to download the patterns onto your computer to print off later. As you learn to crochet, you will want to build a collection of the many different hook sizes.

Keep in mind that patterns can be adapted to suit the purpose of the project. Also keep an eye out for how-to kits.
